Lowes, the home improvement store, offers two credit card options to consumers. As with many retailers, they have a store card that can only be used in the store and consumer cards that can be used anywhere.
With the Lowes Advantage credit card, you can shop anywhere. However, you only benefit when you shop at Lowes. Here is everything that you need to before opening a Lowes credit card.
Features of the Lowes Credit Card
We examined every detail of this card to help you determine if it’s the right option for you. The main highlights include:
- No annual fee
- Various special promotions
- Fraud prevention
- 26.99% APR
- $38 late fees
- 5% off Lowes purchases
You can apply for the card online or at a Lowes store. The approval process is almost immediate. If you don’t get approved, you can open the Lowes store card, which is also called the Lowes Consumer Card. It can only be used in the store.
The Lowes Advantage credit card is a convenient option for those who shop at Lowes. There is No annual fee and you receive various special promotions and discounts for shopping at Lowes throughout the year.
Lowes Credit Card Benefits
The Lowes credit card includes benefits for Lowes shoppers. Luckily, you can start enjoying these benefits the moment that you use your card for the first time.
The main benefit is 5% off all purchases. This applies to almost every item in the store other than gift cards.
The 5% off is unique compared to other retail credit cards. Typically, you earn points based on the total dollar amount of your purchase. You then redeem those points for a reward. This process can take months. However, Lowes applies the 5% off immediately when you check out.
Keep in mind that the 5% off cannot be used with other coupons or the Lowes price guarantee. You also cannot use it on extended protection plans, shipping, assembly, or any other fees.
The other benefits may be chosen in place of the 5% off when you spend more than $299. For example, you can choose 0% APR for six months. However, you will not get the 5% off and you need to pay off your balance before the six months end.
Lowes also offers project financing when you spend over $2,000. This also requires you to give up the 5% off your purchases. With the project financing, you get a limited APR and set minimum payments that gradually increase.
These are not major benefits. However, the 5% off can be useful when buying home renovation supplies at Lowes.
Pros of the Lowes Credit Card
Why do we like this card? We like it for paying for stuff at Lowes. You get instant benefits when you shop with this card at Lowes.
This credit card gets you 5% off your purchases at the register instead of having to wait for months to redeem points, which can take another couple of months to process.
You also don’t have an annual fee or any hidden fees. You’ll simply pay your balance and interest.
Cons of the Lowes Credit Card
What don’t we like about this card? Our main complaint is the 26.99% APR. While this is comparable to other retailer credit cards, it’s still extremely high compared to standard unsecured credit cards.
With the higher APR, you instantly start to feel the cost if you cannot keep your monthly balance at zero. This is why we suggest always paying off your cards in full each month.
Another drawback is the limited rewards. While the 5% off all purchases at Lowes is a great feature, the card does not include any benefits for shopping at other retailers.
Many retailer credit cards offer at least some type of rewards or points system when shopping anywhere. This is a major drawback if you don’t regularly shop at Lowes.
Your Lowes Credit Card Login Info
You can log in to view your Lowes credit card account by visiting the Lowes website. After logging in, you can pay your bill, monitor your activity, and discover the latest offers and special promotions.
Who Is the Lowes Credit Card for?
We can only really recommend this card for people who shop at Lowes. After reviewing the benefits, it becomes clear that there are no advantages to using this card outside of the store.
However, you can save quite a bit of money if you do a lot of shopping at Lowes. You get 5% off your orders at the time of purchase whether you shop their online store or physical location.
If you’re considering a major renovation project, you may choose to use the project financing option. However, you should only use this option if you’re sure that you can pay off the balance before the interest kicks in.
You also need good to excellent credit to get approved for the Lowes Advantage credit card. With poor credit, you’ll need to get the Lowes store card. It offers many of the same features but can only be used in the store or the Lowes website.
Who Is the Lowes Credit Card Not for?
The Lowes Advantage credit card is not for people who don’t shop at Lowes. Even if you only shop at Lowes a few times per year, the rewards are not enough.
If you have low credit, you may also have trouble getting approved for the Lowes Advantage card. There is a greater chance that you’ll get the Lowes Store Card, which can only be used for Lowes purchases.
Basically, if you don’t shop at Lowes, we recommend that you avoid this card.
Last Thoughts on the Lowes Credit Card
The Lowes Advantage Credit Card tries to offer some of the rewards options provided by other retailer cards. However, they miss the mark. They have left out any rewards for purchases made outside of Lowes, which means that it holds no special value for those who don’t shop at the store.
If you do shop at Lowes and feel confident that you can maintain a zero balance, this card is helpful. You can save 5% off your purchases. The 5% off comes off immediately at purchase instead of requiring you to redeem rewards points to receive a gift certificate.
