Walmart Credit Card Review: Is There a Better Alternative?

walmart credit card

Walmart is the largest chain of shopping stores. While they have store cards as many other retailers do, they also offer their own credit card.

The Walmart credit card includes decent APRs and fees. However, it may not be the perfect solution for everyone. Below is a bonus video review of the Walmart cards. Check out our review of the Walmart credit card before you decide to apply.

Features of the Walmart Credit Card

The Walmart credit card is marketed to Walmart shoppers and includes various incentives to help get more people to open new cards. The main features include:

  • $38 late fee
  • Free monthly FICO score
  • 23-day grace period
  • 18.9% to 24.9% APR
  • 3% savings on Walmart purchases

The Walmart credit card is available to those with decent credit. If your credit score is below 650, you may not get approved for the card.

If your application gets denied, you may get approved for the Walmart Store Card. However, the store card can only be used for Walmart purchases.

The Walmart card includes a couple of other useful features. You can get a cash advance of up to $100 at the register of a Walmart store when making a purchase. This includes a 3% cash advance fee.

Walmart also sends you a free monthly FICO score. However, you need to enroll in e-statements to receive this report.

Walmart Credit Card Benefits

Most of the benefits offered with the Walmart credit card are designed for Walmart shoppers. The benefits start when you first open the card.

You can get $35 off on your first purchase when shopping on the Walmart website. You need to spend $75 on this initial purchase and the $35 will appear as a credit on your statement.

However, the initial $35 off may vary. Walmart occasionally changes the sign-up bonus. At times, we’ve noticed that they offer 10% off your first purchase.

You also save 3% on all purchases that are made on the website. Keep in mind that this 3% is offered as a cash-back reward. You get the cash back on your credit statements instead of getting 3% off at the time of purchase.

Besides the 3% cash back on online Walmart purchases, you get 1% cash back on all purchases anywhere that your credit card is accepted. Whether you are buying groceries, eating out, or going to the movies, you get 1% cash back.

Walmart cardholders also get 2% cash back when filling up on gas at Walmart or Murphy USA gas stations.

The combination of rewards is called the Walmart 3-2-1 program. You get 3% cash back on Walmart.com, 2% cash back on gas, and 1% cash back on everything else.

Pros of the Walmart Credit Card

Why do we like this card? There are several advantages to applying for a Walmart credit card. With your Walmart credit card, you get decent rewards.

The 3% cash back on Walmart.com purchases and 1% on everything else is on par with other rewards credit cards. If you shop on the Walmart website frequently, you benefit even more from these rewards.

The 18.9% to 24.99% APR isn’t bad either. Depending on your credit score, you can get a good interest rate on your Walmart card.

Another advantage is the convenience of using the Walmart card. You can easily pay your bills online and receive email notifications for upcoming bills.

There are also no annual fees. You don’t need to pay anything if you keep your balance at zero.

Besides these advantages, Walmart also includes fraud protection and optional six- to 12-month financing options.

Cons of the Walmart Credit Card

The Walmart card has several advantages and a few limitations. One significant limitation is the approval process. You need good credit to get approved for this card.

As mentioned, those with poor credit may only get approved for the Walmart store card, which has a higher APR and can only be used at Walmart and their website.

Your Walmart Credit Card Login Info

You can access your Walmart account info through the Walmart.com website. They have links to the credit center where you can pay your bill and view your current balance.

If you sign up for electronic monthly statements, you can also access your monthly FICO score. With the e-statements, you’ll stop getting paper statements in the mail. When choosing this option with any credit card, I typically like to set up automatic payments to avoid any late fees.

Who Is the Walmart Credit Card for?

The Walmart credit card may be a good option for those who shop at Walmart. The 3% cash back is more than you’ll likely get with other rewards cards.

While you only get 1% cash back on purchases at other retailers, you can buy almost anything at Walmart. From groceries to automotive supplies, it’s a superstore with a little bit of everything.

The Walmart card is also for those with good credit. You need a good score to get approved for this card. In fact, if you have poor credit, you may want to simply avoid trying to get approved.

Who Is the Walmart Credit Card Not for?

If you can’t make your monthly payments or plan to carry a significant balance, this may not be the right card. While the APR is lower compared to most retailer-branded credit cards, it’s still high enough to cause problems.

When you keep a balance on your card, the higher interest rates may slowly make it more difficult to pay down your balance.

Last Thoughts on the Walmart Credit Card

The Walmart card is a little better compared to the typical credit card offered through a retailer. These cards tend to have higher interest rates, late fees, penalties, and limited rewards.

With the Walmart credit card, you get surprisingly decent interest rates, low late fees and penalties, and quality rewards.

The 3 Best Alternative Credit Cards to Consider

Maybe you can do better than this credit card. If you have good credit, you should consider a few other options that will give you better benefits. LEARN HOW TO APPLY >>

Did you hear about the Chase Sapphire Reserve 100k signup bonus that they offered when the card was announced? Yep, it really was that high! For the first few months after inception, the Chase Sapphire Reserve had a 100k Ultimate Rewards point signup bonus. That was back in the second half of 2016.

Supposedly, Chase ran this limited time offer at a loss to the tune of a whopping $300 million. They’ll likely make up that loss in their cardmembers’ life cycle though. In fact, the promotion was so “successful” that Chase reached their 12-month acquisition goal in just two weeks. At Travel Freedom, we see it as the best premium credit card in the travel industry.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Full Disclosure: We may earn a commission if you click this link, at no additional cost to you. : 100k  50k Signup Bonus

As mentioned, even with a signup bonus half as big as it was originally, we still think that the Chase Sapphire Reserve is the best premium credit card in all of the travel credit card market. How is that possible? It’s possible because the Chase Sapphire Reserve has the best travel benefits ever seen in a credit card offer.

Let’s first talk about the signup bonus. The official value of the signup bonus given by Chase is $750, but that is not using the optimal redemption value. The points from the 50k Ultimate Rewards signup bonus can simply be worth at least $1000 simply by redeeming with Chase travel partners.

Our thoughts about the Chase Sapphire Reserve 100k 50k Offer:

The 50k signup bonus is one of the best of any credit cards in the market and it’s just the icing on top of this cards benefits. The benefits of this card are nothing short of great. A $300 travel credit, airport lounge access, TSA PreCheck, and more. Like I said, the benefits are worth more than the annual fee and the signup bonus is the icing on top. The signup bonus alone for this card got us 2 round-trip flights to Hawaii. 3X points on travel and dining can be useful as well. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a must have credit card for people who travel often and can take advantage of its perks. It also makes for a perfect credit card combination with a few of the other Ultimate Rewards cards, as you can combine your point balances between card accounts.

Redeeming Ultimate Rewards through Chase Transfer Partners

Although Ultimate Rewards are given a value of 1.25 cents each by Chase, you can make your points from the Chase Sapphire Reserve 100k 50k bonus worth more than that. There are 13 Ultimate Rewards travel partners consisting of airlines and hotels. You can transfer your points to any of these programs at a 1:1 ratio. We often transfer our Ultimate Rewards to Southwest Airlines, British Airways, and Hyatt hotels to earn redemptions well above 2 cents per point. That’s nearly double what Chase advertises as the value.

Earn Spending Bonuses on Travel and Dining

This card will give you more than just the Chase Sapphire Reserve 100k 50k signup bonus. It has a couple of valuable spending bonus categories. You’ll earn 3X points on all travel and dining purchases. I’m sure you spend money on these two quite a bit.

  • Travel: The travel bonus counts for flights, trains, taxi’s, other transportation, hotels, and much more.
  • Dining: Dining is considered anything purchased from restaurants, bars, cafes, fast food restaurants, restaurant delivery services like (Caviar, Eat24, GrubHub, Postmates, Seamless), and even from vending machines.

I’m going to guess that you spend some money on both travel and dining occasionally. Spending bonuses are a great way to earn some extra Ultimate Rewards without really doing anything. By earning 3X points on these purchases and then redeeming Ultimate Rewards at a value of 2 cents each, you’re essentially earning 6% back on those purchases. 6% value back on a credit card is unheard of!

Chase Sapphire Reserve $300 Travel Credit

If you spend at least $300 on travel yearly, the Chase Sapphire Reserve $300 travel credit essentially erases 2/3 of the annual fee. By taking advantage of the Sapphire Reserve 300 travel credit, the annual fee gets knocked down to $150 (only $55 more than the Sapphire Preferred). That means that you’re paying just $55 for all the other benefits of the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

The Sapphire Reserve travel credit is very simple to use. Every time you spend money on a travel-related expense, you will automatically receive a statement credit for it. Things that count towards the travel credit are:

  • Airlines
  • Hotels
  • Motels
  • Timeshares
  • Campgrounds
  • Car Rental Agencies
  • Cruise Lines
  • Travel Agencies
  • Discount Travel Sites
  • Passenger Trains
  • Buses
  • Taxis
  • Limousines
  • Ferries
  • Toll Bridges and Highways
  • Parking Lots and Garages (parking tickets also – ugh)

Lounge Access is the Best Benefit of the Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers complimentary Priority Pass Select airport lounge access. After being approved for your credit card, you’ll have to activate your Priority Pass Select account. Then you’ll automatically receive a new membership card each year you keep your Sapphire Reserve credit card. Priority Pass airport lounges range in quality, but they’re all a nice relaxing place to get away while you wait at the airport. We like to grab a snack and a drink, charge our phones, and hang out in the comfort of lounge chairs.

Below, are the amenities you can expect in a Priority Pass lounge.

  • Digital Membership Card Option
  • Free Wifi
  • Drinks & Snacks
  • Alcoholic Drinks
  • TV’s
  • Internet Data Ports
  • Newspapers & Magazines
  • Disabled Access

Some lounges also have a few extra perks.

  • Showers
  • Conference Rooms (subject to a fee)

chase sapphire reserve 100k points

Priority Pass now features a few restaurants as well as lounges. At Priority Pass restaurants, members can use their membership card to earn a $28 credit for both themselves and one guest. So, if you and your guest go to a Priority Pass restaurant, you’ll have $56 to spend that will be covered by Priority Pass.

Don’t Forget About the Chase 5/24 Rule

Chase has an unwritten rule, known as the “Chase 5/24 Rule”, that only allows you to be approved for a Chase-branded credit card if you have less than five new credit cards opened within the last 24 months. The five credit cards opened don’t just include Chase credit cards, it includes nearly all credit cards. Small business credit cards don’t count toward the five card limit, but the Chase 5/24 rule does come into effect when applying for a business card.

Chase 5/24 Rule FAQ’s

Can I apply for 2 Chase credit cards on the same day when I’m 4/24 and get approved for both?

  • Data suggests you can, however, we recommend not pushing the line and only apply for one Chase card at a time. People have reported having their account shut down for applying for too much credit.

Can I apply the day my 5/24 limit drops off?

  • Preferably wait until the first day of the next month to apply.

I’m over the 5/24 rule limit, can I be approved for a card from another bank?

  • Yes. Approvals for credit cards from other banks besides Chase are not impacted by your 5/24 score. Each bank has their own set of rules for approval.

Do Chase business cards count toward my 5/24 score?

  • No. Being approved for a Chase business card will not add to your 5/24 limit. However, to get approved for a Chase business card you must be below the 5/24 limit.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve 100k 50k Signup Bonus is Still a Great Offer

While the Chase Reserve 100k signup bonus only lasted a few months, 50k points is still a great offer. At a value of at least $750, it’s still one of the premier bonuses of all cards. What makes it such a great offer is the amazing travel benefits the card comes with. Yes, the annual fee is $450, but it’s worth every penny and more. The signup bonus can be worth over $1000 if you redeem your points efficiently and the other travel benefits are worth even more than that if you use them regularly.

Back in 2016, I was lucky enough to get in on the Chase Sapphire Reserve 100k point offer. With such a high annual fee I planned to downgrade the card before the second year to lose the annual fee. I was wrong. I continue paying the annual fee to keep the card active because the benefits are just so good.

If you’re someone who travels often, this will be a great credit card for you. It sure has been valuable to me. The  Chase Sapphire Reserve Full Disclosure: We may earn a commission if you click this link, at no additional cost to you. 100k 50k offer is still well worth the application. It’s the best premium travel credit card in the industry.

Quicksilver Fees

Overall, the prices and fees that are associated with this credit card are very reasonable. One of the first things that you will see is that this credit card has no associated annual fee. This is excellent, as it allows you to sign up without feeling like you are taking on any type of financial burden. The lack of an annual fee is always a welcome sight, and it is a tick in the positive column for this cash rewards credit card.

You also won’t have to pay out any pesky foreign transaction fees. If you are among the millions of people who travel abroad on a semi-regular basis, then this is going to be a real benefit to you. Many comparable cards will charge very high foreign transaction fees on every purchase that you make while outside of the country. This card avoids any of those problems and keeps things very simple for you, which makes it a good choice for people who travel.

One fee that you will need to take note of is the balance transfer fee. Of course, most credit card companies do have some type of balance transfer fee. The fee on this credit card is set at 3%, and this is within a normal range. It is one of the few fees that you are likely to pay while using this credit card, so this card still comes out ahead of much of the competition in the pricing and fees department.

The introductory APR is stellar for this cash rewards credit card, too. For a period of 15 months, you will be able to take advantage of this. Avoiding high interest rates is always nice, but this introductory rate is especially useful. The introductory APR works on both new purchases and balance transfers, as well. This means that the savvy people among us could potentially benefit from transferring the balance of old credit cards onto this new one.

Your APR will be at a normal rate once the 15-month period has finished. This will work out fairly nicely for you, and you won’t feel like the normal APR is too high or anything. It falls within the normal ranges for credit cards of this tier. This is not something to tout as an incredible APR, but it is not something that you will scoff at either.

Features of the Capital One Quicksilver

Most of the features of this credit card are associated with the rewards program. This is a credit card that offers you 1.5% cash rewards on all of your purchases. This is great, as it allows you to continually earn cash rewards no matter what you are buying. It is easy to use this as your everyday type of credit card for buying anything that is necessary.

You will be getting a rather nice sign-up bonus opportunity when you go with this credit card, too. The sign-up bonus is not the highest in the world or anything, but it is very easy to get. You just need to spend a small amount of money within the first three months of having the card. Once you have met the requirements, you will receive a nice cash bonus.

Managing your credit card account is going to be simple when you sign up for this one, too. You will have access to a convenient mobile app that you can use to check your balance and generally take care of all of your credit card needs. It makes things as easy as possible for anyone who is a busy professional. You will always have the time to check the app to see when your next payment is due, and you’ll have an easy time keeping things in line.

Customer service is very good for this credit card overall. You will be able to reach a customer service agent to assist you with any questions or problems that you may be experiencing. Both online chat and normal phone customer service agents are available to you. You can reach out for help 24/7, so you will never have to fret about questions being left unanswered.

Chevron Credit Card Review: Does It Compare to Other Rewards Cards?

chevron credit card review

Two of the major players in the fuel game – Chevron and Texaco – like many other gas stations offer their own credit cards. The two credit cards offered by these companies include the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card and Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card.

If you frequently purchase gas at Chevron and Texaco, you may be interested in getting a Chevron-Texaco credit card. In this review, we’ll help you decide whether a Chevron-Texaco credit card is right for you or not.

Chevron Techron Advantage Credit Card

The highlights of Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card:

  • No annual fee
  • 3¢/gal in fuel credits for fuel purchases at Chevron and Texaco stations
  • Online account management
  • $0 fraud liability
  • 24/7 access to cash
  • Exclusive offers

This a branded-credit card offered by Chevron and Texaco. The rewards aren’t as great as those offered by some of the other gas credit cards, so we don’t recommend you to get this credit card. The Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card doesn’t charge an annual fee. Therefore, it could be an option for consumers who want to rebuild their credit score. The APR of this credit card reaches close to 29% which is why it’s important to use this card responsibly.

There aren’t any strict requirements you need to match for applying for this credit card. When it comes to rewards, the only thing you get is a 3¢ for every single gallon fuel purchased at Chevron and Texaco stations.

This credit card doesn’t offer anything extraordinary. It gives zero fraud liability meaning that you can’t be held accountable in case of unauthorized transactions. Another feature is that you’ll get exclusive savings offers at different times during the year. However, there isn’t any information disclosed by Chevron and Texaco about these deals.  The card offers various online management features for the ease of cardholders. You can check the balance on your card and make payments online.

It’s clear that the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card doesn’t offer enough rewards to the cardholders. It might only be a good option for rebuilding credit as it doesn’t come with an annual fee. Other than that, there isn’t much value you can get from this credit card.

Chevron Techron Advantage Visa Card

The highlights of Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card:

  • No annual fee
  • 3¢/gal in fuel credits for fuel purchases at Chevron and Texaco stations
  • 20¢ per gallon in fuel credit if you buy fuel at Chevron or Texaco station during the first 90 days after opening your credit card account
  • For spending $300 per month outside of fuel merchants, you’ll receive 10¢/gal in fuel credit (OR)
  • For spending $1,000 per month outside of fuel merchants, you’ll receive 20¢/gal in fuel credit

There is a major difference between the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card and the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card in terms of rewards. This card gives a 3¢ per every gallon in fuel credits for gas purchased at the Chevron and Texaco. In addition, it also offers a 20¢ per gallon in fuel credit if you buy fuel at Chevron or Texaco station during the first 90 days after opening your credit card account.

Another advantage is that this card can be used outside of Chevron and Texaco stations. There are even rewards for purchases made elsewhere. For instance, on spending $300 per month outside of fuel merchants, you’ll receive 10¢/gal in fuel credit. If you spend $1,000 per month outside of fuel merchants, you’ll get 20¢/gal in fuel credit.

The Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card offers a good deal and is a lot better than the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card. If you spend $1,000 or more in purchases other than fuel, you could save a few bucks from 20¢/gal in fuel credit reward.

The other features on this credit card as the same as those of the branded version including No annual fee, online account management, 24/7 cash access and $0 fraud liability.

Once you’ve registered your card, you can log into your account by entering your User ID and Password. From the online account, you can check your balance and make payments. You can access your account 24/7 online. There is also a mobile app that you can use for making payments and checking the status of your Chevron-Texaco credit card.

Should You Get a Chevron Credit Card?

The Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card doesn’t offer any special rewards except for the 3¢/gal in fuel credits. It is only good for rebuilding credit, so we wouldn’t recommend this credit card if you plan on saving money on fuel. However, the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card offers good rewards and may allow you to save a few bucks on fuel purchases at Chevron and Texaco stations.

If you spend $300 or $1000 a month in non-fuel related purchases, you could save money from the 10¢/gal or 20¢/gal in fuel credits reward. Not only that, but you can enjoy 20¢/gal in fuel credit reward for fuel purchases within the first 90 days. It would make sense for you to get the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card if you frequently purchase fuel at Chevron and Texaco stations. Otherwise, we wouldn’t recommend this card to you as there are plenty of better alternatives out there.

An Alternative Card to Consider

If you’re looking for a fuel credit card that’ll give you plenty of rewards, we suggest the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. There’s No annual fee on this card and it offers 3% cash back for fuel purchased from U.S. gas stations. In addition, there is 6% cash back on the card on the first $6,000 spent in a year at the supermarkets in the country.

Our Lasts Thoughts on the Chevron Credit Credit Card

In a nutshell, the Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card doesn’t offer compelling rewards, but the rewards Chevron-Texaco Techron Advantage Visa Card offers are good. You may be able to save a few bucks from the rewards on the Visa Card if you frequently purchase gas at Chevron and Texaco stations. So, only get this card if you’re an avid Chevron and Texaco customer; otherwise, look for better alternatives.

American Express Gold Card Fees

Right away you are going to see that there is a large annual fee attached to this credit card. You will need to pay a $250.00 annual fee in order to make use of this credit card. That is automatically going to limit its appeal for some people. If you do not like to pay large annual fees, then this credit card may not be for you.

Even so, this credit card can make up for the high annual fee for those who are going to use it often enough. It is possible to earn much more in rewards money than the cost of the annual fee. It just depends on how often you spend money on dining out. Just know that this fee is going to be a factor in determining whether or not this card is for you.

You will not have to worry about any type of foreign transaction fees when you use this credit card. It is always nice to be able to avoid annoying fees whenever possible. If you need to use this credit card while you are abroad, then you can do so without fear. Being able to enjoy those fine restaurants across the world will be a very good experience overall, and there will be no extra fees that will sour the experience.

Otherwise, there are not any fees that are really worth mentioning in regards to this credit card. It will offer you a fairly standard experience when it comes to balance transfers, late fees, and other expenses. The APR is fairly average for a card of this tier, and it does not offer any type of a special introductory rate.

Features of the Amex Gold Card

Most of the features that you will be enjoying on this credit card are related to its rewards program. We will be discussing the rewards program in detail later. It is worth mentioning that this card does have a good introductory bonus. It is not so amazing that it will make you want to sign up all by itself, but it is certainly worth talking about.

As is standard practice for these welcome bonuses, you will need to spend a certain amount of money in the first three months of being a cardholder. The money must be spent in certain qualifying categories as well. Once this requirement has been met, you will be able to get a pretty good chunk of points. These points can definitely help to justify the annual fee, and it will be a good start for anyone who loves earning rewards.

Benefits of the Amex Gold Card

The Amex Gold Card actually has a number of different benefits that will make signing up even more attractive. For example, you will be able to take advantage of several special credits. You can make use of a $100.00 airline fee credit that you can use to pay for baggage fees and in-flight purchases. The only caveat is that you need to choose an eligible airline in order to be able to use your credits.

Another available credit is the annual dining credit. You can earn up to $10.00 in statement credits every month when you use your card to buy things at participating dining partners. Some of these dining partners include the Cheesecake Factory and Shake Shack. You have to enroll in this program through the American Express website in order to be able to take advantage of this benefit, but it is well worth doing. It could mean an extra $120.00 a year in statement credits for you.

Booking a hotel room through the Amex Hotel Collection is going to come with certain benefits too. You will be able to receive a $75.00 credit to use toward dining, resort activities, and spas on the property. You’ll also be able to earn 2X rewards points on this purchase, so it will be worthwhile to use your card to book your hotels through the Amex Hotel Collection whenever it is possible. Hotel visits need to be at least two nights or longer in order for this beneficial credit to kick in.

Cardholders will also be able to rely on baggage insurance to help improve their overall traveling experience. Luggage that is damaged, stolen, or otherwise lost is going to be protected by this great benefit. You are going to be eligible for up to $1,250.00 in coverage for your carry-on baggage, and checked bags will be covered for up to $500.00.

Rewards Program Info

This rewards program is going to be the big selling point of this credit card. Amex Gold Card members will be able to earn 4X rewards points on restaurant purchases globally. Only US restaurants used to count, but now all restaurants around the world are game. Even so, this is a very high rewards rate that can help you to earn a lot of rewards over time.

You will also be able to earn an increased rewards rate for purchases made at US supermarkets. You can earn 4X rewards points for purchases made at US supermarkets. This is capped at the first $25,000 that you spend in a year. After spending $25,000, you will be earning rewards at a 1X rate.

Cardholders can also earn 3X rewards points on airfare that is purchased directly through the airline. This makes it a pretty reliable travel credit card. This card hits many bonus categories that are going to be appealing to you. Whether or not this card is going to be a perfect fit will depend on just how well you can make use of these bonus categories.

Redeeming rewards is a great experience with this credit card. You can even transfer the points over to various travel partners. This gives you a ton of different options to consider when you want to use all of those points that you have been accumulating. When you transfer the points to one of the partner businesses, it really allows you to maximize the value of the points.

Rewards points can also be redeemed for things such as statement credit, gift cards, and much more. As long as you are willing to experiment a bit with the partner businesses, you should be able to use your points very effectively. This will allow you to really stretch those points out far. It can make it feel like you are earning rewards at a rate that is much higher than 4X, depending on how you use the points.

The Pros

  • Fantastic rewards potential
  • Bonus categories are easy to take advantage of
  • Redeeming rewards is a great experience
  • Beneficial credits

This card truly does have fantastic rewards potential. If you are looking for a credit card that will allow you to earn rewards at a high rate, then this one is going to really pique your interest. The Amex Gold Card is one of the best possible credit cards for both dining and grocery shopping. It helps you to get the most out of your money.

Bonus categories that are easy to take advantage of really make credit cards more appealing. You will always need to go grocery shopping, so you will constantly be earning rewards on your monthly expenses. The dining and airfare bonus categories are very helpful, too. This card will be quite useful to many different people.

Redeeming rewards is such a great experience with this credit card. You are given so many different options, and there are various ways that you can transfer the points to partner programs. It is possible to get a lot for your earned rewards points. It is one of the best rewards redemption programs around.

The beneficial credits that you will be receiving are very useful, too. Being able to enjoy credits to help mitigate airline baggage fees is a nice touch. Receiving statement credit for purchasing food from participating dining businesses is nice, as well. This card offers nice benefits, while also just being a good rewards card.

The Cons

  • The annual fee is somewhat high
  • Some people may prefer a simpler credit card
  • American Express is not accepted in as many places as some other cards
  • Could use more benefits

The annual fee of this credit card is still going to turn some people away from signing up. If you do not like the sound of paying a $250.00 annual fee, then you may want to think twice. Even so, this card can earn you a lot more money than $250.00 worth of rewards. Even the beneficial credits can potentially offset this annual fee, so you may not want to let it influence your decision too much.

Some people are going to prefer simpler credit cards, too. If you do not like having to worry about bonus categories, then this card may feel convoluted to you. This card should be used for specific things in order to maximize its rewards potential. Some might want to go after a flat rate cash back rewards card instead if they dislike bonus categories.

It should also be said that American Express is not accepted in quite as many places as Visa or MasterCard. American Express is a very good credit card company, but it may not be accepted everywhere. Keep this in mind before you sign up. It should not be a big issue, but it could cause a few problems here and there.

Lastly, this credit card does not have as many benefits as some other credit cards. If you really like being able to enjoy nice perks for being a cardholder, then this card may only feel so-so in that department. The benefits that are there are quite nice, but it could use something more special such as airport lounge access. Even if the benefits of being a cardholder are only average, this card is still a very good option based solely on the rewards program.

Credit Score Needed for Approval

If you want to get approved for this credit card, then you are going to need to have a very good or excellent credit score. Those who have a score of 690 or higher should be able to get approved for this credit card. Other factors are going to be considered as well such as income and general credit history. It is always best to check your credit score ahead of applying for a new credit card so that you will know what to expect.

Who Does the Amex Gold Card Appeal To Most?

A credit card like this actually has a very broad appeal. It is going to appeal to people who eat at restaurants frequently due to that category offering such high rewards potential. If you love trying out new restaurants and you find yourself going to them several times a week, then this card is perfect for you. You will earn an increased reward amount for using this credit card, and it will be easy to benefit from your dining habits.

Anyone who is looking for a good credit card to use for groceries will love this card, too. This is going to allow you to earn 4X rewards points at supermarkets for the first $25,000 that you spend each year. Being that most people would never spend that much money at the supermarket in a year, this card will pretty much always pay out the 4X rewards rate on your grocery purchases. You will be able to accumulate rewards points incredibly fast when you use this card.

This is a good card for people who like to travel, too. It offers 3X points when you use the card to pay for flights that are booked through the Amex travel website or directly through airlines. This allows you to earn some of your money back when you are going on a trip. This credit card is practical to use in so many situations, and it certainly deserves a spot in your wallet if you can make use of it properly. If you need a travel credit card that is practical in other ways, then this one might be the right fit for you.

An Alternative Card to Consider

Finding an alternative to this credit card is something that is somewhat difficult. It does not have many cards that directly compete with it. There are cards that may work out better for certain consumers who would like to avoid the high annual fee. One credit card to consider is the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Full Disclosure: We may earn a commission if you click this link, at no additional cost to you. .

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is going to come in with a $95.00 annual fee. You will be able to enjoy 2X rewards points on all of your dining and travel purchases. It may not have quite the same rewards potential as the American Express Gold Card, but it does offer a very good rewards experience. If you want to pay a lower annual fee, then this card will work out nicely for you.

Decision Time: Is the Gold Card from American Express Right for You?

The Amex Gold Card is a fantastic credit card that should be in your wallet if you can make use of it often enough. You are going to be able to earn a lot of rewards for your dining purchases, and you can also earn increased rewards on grocery purchases. Even with the grocery purchases being capped at $25,000 per year, this card is going to be very worthwhile. It gives people the potential to earn a very large amount of rewards for using the card in ways that will feel natural.

If you eat at restaurants often and if you buy a lot of groceries, then this just might be your new favorite credit card. You do not often see credit cards that offer rewards potential that is this great. Combine that with the good benefits and the lack of foreign transaction fees to get a really appealing credit card. This is going to be a perfect fit for so many people, so don’t let that $250.00 annual fee scare you off.

British Airways Credit Card Fees

When it comes to picking out an airline rewards credit card, you want to make sure that you are getting a good value. The rewards program is where you will be focusing a lot of your attention but it is important to consider the fees as well. If the fees of a given credit card are too high, then you might end up wasting more money than you are bringing in. Thankfully, the fees of the British Airways Credit Card are fairly middling.

You will be paying a $95 annual fee when you sign up for this credit card. This falls right in the middle of the pack in terms of credit card fees for an airline-based rewards card. It is not overly high but it still may be high enough to give certain people pause. Keep it in mind if you are the type of person who really gets soured on credit cards when they charge annual fees.

There are some other fees that you should be aware of as well. For instance, this credit card has a balance transfer fee of 5% with a $5 minimum fee. This is not too terrible but it may make it that you will want to avoid transferring a balance to the credit card. In all honesty, the APR is not good enough to make balance transfers a worthwhile option so you’re best off forgetting about this one.

On the good side of things, you will not have to pay any foreign transaction fees for this credit card. Not having to pay foreign transaction fees makes sense being that this is a British Airways credit card. Most of the people who use this credit card will be traveling internationally from time to time. Even so, it is also good to be able to avoid those pesky foreign transaction fees. It makes it more practical to use your credit card while abroad and that is very important when you are traveling regularly.

Features and Benefits of the British Airways Credit Card

As you might expect, this credit card is going to have various positive features and benefits for you to enjoy. One thing that should be pointed out at the start is the introductory offer. This offer makes it possible to earn even more bonus points during the first year as a cardholder. For every $1 spent, you will be able to earn 4 points up to 120,000 points. It is pretty much getting free points for just using your card as normal and you do not have to meet any special criteria to get these points.

It is also worth noting that this credit card refers to its bonus points as “Avios”. We will simply be referring to the bonus points as points in the article but you need to know the type of language that they use when you sign up. It is actually possible to rack up points pretty easily with this card when you use it often. It is very customer-friendly in this way and we will be discussing the rewards program options in detail later on.

As far as special benefits go, this card does have a few nice things to offer. One good benefit is that you have the potential to earn a “travel together” ticket. If you spend $30,000 on your credit card in a calendar year, then you will be able to earn a free flight for one other person. This flight can even be redeemed in first class, making it a pretty good benefit. You need to pay the taxes and fees for this flight and the flight needs to originate in the U.S. as well as return there.

You will also gain access to car rental insurance for being a cardholder. This is always a good perk to have when you are a regular traveler. It can help to mitigate some of your expenses when it comes to renting cars. This insurance will also be very useful in the event that something does happen to your rental car.

Another interesting perk that you can enjoy access to a concierge service. Having access to a good concierge service can make your travel experience that much nicer. A concierge service can act as a facilitator for you, helping you to book reservations as well as helping you in other ways. It is not something that everyone will use all of the time but it can be quite beneficial.

british airways credit card

British Airways Rewards Program Info

The rewards program for this credit card is where you will really start to be able to see if this is going to be right for you. This credit card will allow you to earn three bonus points for every $1 spent on British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. You will also be able to receive one bonus point for every $1 spent on all other purchases. This is a pretty good rewards rate overall and it could be very beneficial to you if you spend enough money on airfare from these specific airlines.

It should also be reiterated that you will earn an increased number of bonus points per $1 spent for the first 12 months of being a cardholder. This is the sign-up bonus for the credit card and it can really wind up paying off if you buy a lot of airplane tickets. Those who travel very regularly may even find that this is one of the most lucrative sign-up bonuses that you will encounter. Of course, mileage will vary on how useful this bonus is due to everyone having different personal spending habits.

When it comes to redeeming your earned rewards points, things will be good for some and less than stellar for others. You can redeem your earned bonus points for travel on airlines that are part of the Oneworld alliance. There are also some other partner airlines that will increase the number of options that are available to you. The easiest way to use the rewards points is usually to book the travel through the British Airways website.

Flying domestically using British Airways Avios is one of the best redemption options around. By booking flights on British Airways partners, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, you can get reward flights at low rates. The options for international flights are also good and you will be able to use them in so many different ways. Once you learn how to use your British Airways points (Avios) for domestic flights, you’ll be booking with BA very often. My wife and I typically use these points to travel from the west coast to Hawaii for 25,000 points round trip. It’s one of the best ways to redeem points these days.

Booking flights with British Airways is easy, even though you may need to call to book. Their reward chart is distance based and flights cost the following amount of points per mile.

The Pros

  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Good rewards rates
  • Ability to earn free companion tickets
  • Potentially lucrative sign-up bonus
  • Has advantages for international flights

The lack of foreign transaction fees is a really important thing for this credit card. For the most part, people who use this card are going to be traveling abroad quite a bit. Being able to use the credit card outside of the country without having to worry about fees is a must. This might be a bit of an expected thing for a card that is meant to be used internationally but it is still a positive thing that is worth touting.

Also, this card has very good rewards earning rates overall. If you want to be able to accrue bonus points at a good rate, then you will likely love using this card. Those who spend a lot of money on airfare each year will have the chance to really rack up the points. This could be a constant source of bonus rewards for you and should help to offset some of your travel expenses.

The ability to earn a free companion ticket for a flight is very nice too. You can even redeem this free companion ticket for a first-class flight, meaning that this could potentially be worth thousands of dollars. It is a very good bonus that will require you to spend $30,000 in a calendar year. If you spend a lot on travel, you just might be able to take advantage of this.

The sign-up bonus for this credit card is potentially very lucrative as well. You will be earning extra bonus points on your first $30,000 spent in the first 12 months. This could wind up adding up to a lot of extra points and you can use the points as you see fit. It could be a fantastic sign-up bonus if you are a big spender when it comes to airfare.

The Cons

  • Bonus points can expire.
  • There are noticeable airline surcharges.
  • Domestic flight options are limited.
  • The credit card is missing some benefits that you may expect.

One of the biggest problems that people will have with this credit card is that the bonus points have the potential to expire. These bonus points will expire if you do not make a purchase, collect points, spend points, or share points within a 36-month period. Granted, this will not be an issue for most people. You would have to ignore the credit card for a long time in order to allow the points to expire but it is still something that you need to know about before signing up.

You also need to know about the fact that there are noticeable airline surcharges when you use this card. For instance, the carrier surcharges that you will see when you redeem certain award tickets will be exceptionally high. This can actually increase the cost of a ticket by several hundred dollars and winds up devaluing your earned rewards points quite a bit. Just know that the points for this card may not have the highest value when compared to the points of other comparable cards.

The domestic flight options are always going to be very limited with this credit card as well. You can transfer reward points to domestic airlines such as American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. This limits the potential of this card for people who want robust domestic travel options. It is meant more as an international flight credit card, judging by the way things are set up. Just know that domestic flight options will be narrower in scope than the international ones when you go to redeem points.

It should also be said that this credit card is missing some benefits that you may expect from a card like this. You will not be getting any free checked bags for being a cardholder or airline fee credits. Some people will see the benefits of this card and think that it is very lacking. It partially depends on your own expectations but it is odd that many standard airline credit card benefits are not present here.

Credit Score Needed for Approval

You will have to possess an excellent credit score just to be approved for this credit card. Scores in the very good range may also have a chance but excellent credit scores are highly recommended. A score of 690 or higher will make it possible to be approved for this card. It is smart to check your credit score before applying to avoid any disappointment.

Who Does the British Airways Credit Card Appeal to Most?

This credit card is going to appeal mostly to people who have to travel internationally sometimes. If you are not going to be using British Airways, then obviously this credit card is not going to be a worthwhile option for you. If you have to travel to Europe on business or to visit family, then this card may be very worthwhile. It can help you to earn rewards for making your normal airfare purchases.

Cards such as this also appeal to people who spend a ton of money airfare each year. If you are able to spend $30,000 on airfare in a calendar year, you will even be able to earn that free companion ticket for one flight. Those who travel all the time will be able to get the most value out of this credit card. It can be worthwhile for those who travel a bit less frequently too but it’s best for regular travelers.

Does the Citi Prestige Compare to the Best Premium Travel Cards?

We have good news and bad news about the Citi Prestige credit card. We’ll give you the bad news first to get it out of the way. The Citi Prestige is no longer available for applications. Citi has pulled the plug on the Citi Prestige credit card but could reintroduce it at some point. While this is unfortunate, the good news is that there are some other good premium credit card options. If you were hoping to get a Citi Prestige card, you will instead want to look at the features of these comparable credit cards. From the sounds of it, Citi plans to reintroduce applications to the Citi Prestige card in January of 2019.

“Our go-to-market strategy continuously evolves to feature different products and offers. We remain committed to the Prestige product and servicing our valued existing cardmembers. We look forward to reintroducing the card for new cardmembers in the near future.”

-Citi Spokesperson

Yes, the Citi Prestige is one of the best premium credit cards available. But, you won’t be able to apply for it until it’s reintroduction in January 2019. In the meantime, there are a few other great premium credit cards. Fortunately, they do meet the same level of quality benefits when compared to the Citi Prestige.

Features that the Citi Prestige will Offer (Application Reintroduction in Jan. 2019)

The Citi Prestige card was packed with features and benefits to make it such a great premium credit card. It featured an assortment of nice travel and entertainment benefits. The main benefit that none of the other available premium credit cards offer is the 4th night free. It allowed you to receive one free night during a hotel stay of four nights that was booked through Citi. Basically, equaling 25% off during that stay. It was an excellent benefit and will be missed dearly. Below are the features of the Citi Prestige that stood out.

  • Annual $250 “Travel” Credit – (Starting in January 2019)
  • Complimentary 4th Night Stay (Limited to twice yearly starting in September 2019)
  • Cell Phone Protection Plan (Starting in May 2019)
  • 5X Points on Dining and Air Travel (Starting in January 2019)
  • Airport Lounge Access
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Free Golf Benefit
  • Citi Concierge Service
  • Trip & Travel Insurance
  • Delayed and Lost Baggage Protection
  • Auto Rental Coverage
  • Annual fee of $450 (will rise to $495 in  September 2019)

Who the Citi Prestige Card was For

The Citi Prestige was a credit card for people who travel frequently and want premium travel benefits. The card was made for high spenders as the more money you spent on travel, the easier it was to justify paying the hefty annual fee. If you travel frequently, the annual travel credit, Airport Lounge Access, complimentary 4th-night stay, adsnd  TSA PreCheck would far outweigh the fees. Especially because the travel credit was given every calendar year, so it was possible to receive the benefit twice within one annual fee cycle. Just because the Citi Prestige is no longer available for application, doesn’t mean premium travel benefits are gone. There are some other credit cards that offer very similar benefits to cardmembers.

Other Premium Credit Cards that Compare to the Citi Prestige

While the Citi Prestige card is no longer available for application, there are some other premium credit cards that offer similar benefits. Some of these cards may even be better than what was offered by the Citi Prestige.  We’ll analyze both of the best currently offered premium credit cards and compare them to what the Citi Prestige was offering.

Final Results: Which Premium Credit Card is the Best?

So, which card is the best premium travel credit card to get instead of the (no longer available) Citi Prestige? After comparing the benefits offered by the two best premium credit cards and analyzing the results, there is a clear first and second place.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes in first place with the most benefits compared to the amount paid in annual fees. It is the best premium credit card available in the market. The Platinum Card from American Express comes in second place. It packs a few more benefits, especially with extra lounge access, but also has a higher annual fee than the rest of the cards. Chase Ultimate Rewards and Membership Rewards points are both very valuable with the availability of transfer partners. Both types of points can be transferred to airlines and hotels making their introductory offers very valuable.

  2. The Platinum Card from American Express Learn More > Full Disclosure: We may earn a commission if you click this link, at no additional cost to you.

While annual fees of $450 or more may sound crazy, you can see that the benefits can far outweigh the fees. It really depends on your travel habits and what you value, as to which of these credit cards would be the best for you. They are both great credit cards and they compare well to the Citi Prestige card that is not currently available. It will be interesting to see what the Citi Prestige will have to offer when it is reintroduced. We’ll keep you updated.

Our thoughts about the Chase Ink Preferred:

The Introductory Offer is the best of any credit card in the market. It’s a surprise how much value Chase will give away for a credit card with only a $95 annual fee. I have this credit card and absolutely love its benefits. When I got this card, I used the introductory offer bonus to purchase two round-trip flights to Hawaii, and still had an extra 30,000 points. The spending category bonuses are worthwhile for my online business. I can earn a lot of bonus points with my combination of Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards.

Ink Business Preferred Has Replaced the Chase Ink Plus

In 2016 the Chase Ink Business Plus credit card was replaced by the Ink Business Preferred. While it has slightly different features, it’s mainly a very similar card. The Ink Business Preferred is not quite as good at earning Ultimate Rewards points through spending, but it has a much higher introductory offer, at 80k points. The Ink Business Preferred is our favorite business credit card, here at Travel Freedom.

Our Chase Ink Business Preferred Review

The Chase Ink Preferred credit card is the best travel credit card available if you’re looking to earn a lot of points quickly. In my opinion, it gives the most value and benefits compared to its cost out of all credit cards. That includes both business and personal cards.

Chase Ink Preferred is a business credit card with an extremely large and valuable introductory offer, good spending category bonuses, great purchase protection, easy point redemption, and the best flexibility of any points around. If you’re a small business owner, I would heavily consider putting the Chase Ink Preferred in your wallet.

Best Introductory Offer of All Travel Credit Cards

The best benefit of the Chase Ink Preferred is its extremely generous introductory offer. After spending $5,000 on the card in the first 3 months, you’ll receive 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points as a bonus. With these points being worth up to 2 cents each, that values the bonus at a whopping $1600.

Of course, it could be less valuable or it could be worth even more depending on how you decide to redeem the points. Even if you were to redeem your points for gift cards (which gives the least value), the introductory bonus would be worth $800 which is very good and much higher than the average.

Prices and Fees

This card is actually pretty good when it comes to prices and fees. There will be an annual fee that you will be expected to pay each year. It comes in at a very standard range and is not higher than most comparable business credit cards on the market. Most of the best business credit cards will feature an annual fee of some sort so this is not unusual in any way.

The APR of this credit card is seen as being a little bit on the high side. It is not too bad but there may be business credit card options with a more favorable APR out there. When you consider everything that this credit card has to offer, the annual fee and APR start to fade to the back of your mind. This is a full-featured credit card that offers some of the best rewards possible, making it a very desirable option for most business owners.

Features

You will find that the features of the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card are really good for businesses. This card is going to allow you to get free cards for your employees to use. It is always nice to be able to avoid paying extra fees when you need to hand out business credit cards to members of your managerial staff. This makes it a lot easier to take care of your business needs and is a welcome feature.

The biggest feature of this credit card is the high rewards rate. This card offers points on every single dollar spent. What is even better is that it offer 3X points on dollars spent on travel, shipping, utility services such as phone and Internet, and advertising services. It makes this card very useful for business that have these types of expenses as it increases the rate at which you are earning rewards.

Most businesses will be able to take full advantage of this type of credit card. The bonus points categories are all really common expenses for businesses. If you want to get the most out of your business credit card, then this one will make sense for your company. There are also many features that make using your points as easy as possible.

For instance, you can enjoy a 25% boost in your point value for travel redemptions when booking through the Chase Ultimate Rewards program. If you use this card as intelligently as you can, then you can really maximize the rewards. You can even transfer points to different airline and hotel programs. Combine this with the travel protections that are offered through this card and you have a really good package overall.

Benefits

You will be able to enjoy some extra benefits when you sign up for this business credit card. One of the more popular benefits that keeps customers happy is purchase protections. Your purchases on this card are going to be covered for up to 120 days on this plan. It protects you from potential damage or theft and is a good assurance to have.

Customers can take advantage of cellphone coverage through this card too. The Ink Business Preferred Business Credit Card will pay a good amount of money per claim for lost or damaged phones. This is very convenient for businesses that issue work cellphones to their employees. It can help to cut down on potential losses and make things easier for you.

It should be noted that there is a maximum of three claims available per 12-month period for these cellphone claims. There is also a deductible attached to the claims but it is very reasonable. It is just another benefit that can potentially help your business out if you decide to go with this card.

Rewards Program Info

As you can tell by reading the feature section, this business credit card is all about the rewards program. The big draw of this credit card is the fact that it produces rewards at a very high rate. Aside from this, you will also be getting a rather large signup bonus. The bonus features of this card are among the very best possible, making it a great option for anyone who wants to earn rewards.

It is so easy to accumulate rewards points while using this credit card for normal business purchases. You will be able to rack up points more quickly than you could with just about any other business credit card. For businesses that spend a lot of money on regular expenses, the rewards will come in very easily. It makes it possible to benefit from paying the important expenses that are an absolute necessity for your business.

Even purchases that fall outside of the bonus categories will be earning you points towards rewards. This makes it a good general-purpose business credit card as well. Redeeming your points will always be simple and they are partnered with many airlines and hotels. Transferring points to a hotel or airline for travel purposes will be easy so you will be able to make use of these rewards in the most convenient way possible.

The Pros

This is going to be a perfect credit card for businesses that spend money in certain categories. Most businesses are going to need to spend money on things such as cable, Internet, and telephone services every month. Businesses also commonly spend money on advertising, travel expenses, and shipping needs. If your business has significant monthly expenses in these categories, then signing up for this card will prove to be a great idea.

Simply signing up for this card will allow you to earn rewards at a high rate. You can expect to earn rewards more consistently than you would with other types of business credit cards. Using your rewards points towards things such as travel will be very easy too. If you book your travel through Chase Unlimited Rewards, you can even enjoy a slight bump in the rewards earned.

Aside from the robust rewards program, this card even helps to protect your interests. You can enjoy travel protection, purchase protection, and cellphone protection. The travel protections will prove to be particularly useful for businesses that travel regularly. It allows for trip cancellation and interruption insurance so that you will not be wasting money when problems happen during or before travel.

You will not have to pay any foreign transaction fees when using this business credit card either, making it perfect for travel needs. The admirable purchase protection feature will help to keep you safe from damage or theft issues. The claim amounts per account are very generous and this will be a useful feature for many businesses. This card is very good in a lot of ways so it has the chance to work out brilliantly for your business needs.

The Cons

The cons that can be associated with this credit card do not necessarily indicate that the card is lacking in any way. You just need to make sure that this card is going to be the right fit for your business. For example, some businesses may not spend enough money on the bonus categories to truly take advantage of what this card has to offer. If you do not have the right monthly expenses to make this card worth your while, then you might want to look into other options.

All of the rewards for this credit card are done through rewards points too. Some people are not as interested in rewards points categories as others. If you do not know whether or not you will be able to take advantage of your rewards points, then this may not appeal to you. Those who do not regularly travel may not find the rewards to be as appealing.

A good cash-back rewards business credit card may work out better for those who do not travel often. You want to be able to use the rewards that you receive from your credit effectively. If you are not able to do so, then it winds up feeling as if it is wasted potential. This is why it is smart to look at your business expenses ahead of signing up for this card.

Keeping track of bonus categories is something that some businesses will not want to do either. This is a card that is spectacular for those who want to take the time to use it right. If you want a simpler experience, then there are other business credit cards out there that offer a more streamlined cash-back rewards option. This is a card that appeals to people who like to use their cards intelligently while spending rewards points effectively.

What Credit Score is Needed for Approval?

Generally speaking, you are going to want to have a credit score of 690 or above to be approved for this business credit card. This is a fairly high credit score but the card will be worth applying for if you are in need of a good card. This is a credit card option that can help businesses to maximize their potential rewards so it makes sense that the approval process would be a bit tough. Any businesses that have a credit score high enough to take advantage of this card will definitely want to consider signing up.

chase ink business preferred benefits

Who Does This Credit Card Appeal to Most?

This credit card appeals to businesses that want to be able to take advantage of rewards for their normal expenses. The fact that this card offers 3X bonus points on regular spending categories for businesses will be the main draw. Being able to earn rewards at a high rate for simply paying utility bills and travel expenses will be great. It allows you to get the most out of your business credit card while simply paying your normal business expenses.

Some businesses will not spend as much money on these things, though. In order for a business to take full advantage of this credit card, it is necessary for them to have high enough yearly expenses. If the expenses of your business are lower, then you will want to consider other options. For instance, if your company does not have an advertising budget, then you would not be gaining any points in that category.

Before signing up, take a look at how your business expenses look. If you are spending a significant amount of money on advertising, utilities, shipping, and travel, then this card will be sensible for you. It will allow you to reap the rewards that this card has to offer. If you don’t feel as though your business spends enough in these common categories to make it worthwhile, then it will still be a good card but it might not be quite as appealing.

Other Alternative Business Credit Cards to Consider for Travel

One good alternative to consider is the Business Platinum card from Amex. This is another popular credit card for businesses that will work well for your needs. If you are looking into the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card due to travel expenses, then the Business Amex Platinum is going to appeal to you as well. It offers a high rewards rate with an emphasis on travel rewards.

The annual fee of this card is much higher than the Ink Business Preferred card. Both options are fantastic but this one might be better for some small businesses that spend a lot of money on traveling frequently. It just depends on your specific needs. Amex Platinum has a higher fee because it also comes with many travel perks like airport lounge access and TSA PreCheck. Look at the features of both cards side by side if you are on the fence about either of them.

Another good option to look into will be the Ink Business Cash Credit Card. This is another excellent credit card that is somewhat similar in the way that it works except that it offers cash back on purchases. Being able to earn cash back on the first $25,000 of purchases will be appealing for any business. It is a great way to earn rewards that you can use right away instead of having to wait to use travel rewards.

For certain businesses, the Ink Business Cash Credit Card is going to be the more sensible option. If you buy a lot of office supplies for your business, then a card such as this is going to come in handy. You will be earning cash back on your purchases up to a certain amount and it will be easy. This card also has no annual fee to contend with so it is easy to justify applying for it if it sounds appealing to you.

The lower limits of the Ink Business Cash Credit Card do limit its appeal for businesses that have high expenses. If you worry that you will blow past the $25,000 limit on cash-back rewards for certain categories, then it may not be optimal. Even so, this is a perfect card for businesses that spend the right amount of money per year. It might be a good alternative to the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card, depending on your needs.

As you can see, the Chase Ink Preferred has the best introductory offer of these other top business credit cards. At 80,000 points for meeting a minimum spending requirement of $5000, the offer is unbeatable. The Ink Cash has a lower minimum spending requirement but offers 30,000 points less. The Amex Platinum offers a close number of points for its welcome offer but you’d have to spend $20,000 in 3 months to earn it. Such as large introductory offer with a reasonable spending requirement is hard to come by these days.

Chase Ink Preferred Earns Ultimate Rewards Points

As mentioned above, the Chase Ink Preferred earns Ultimate Rewards points. These are considered by many to be the most valuable travel points of any. They are so valuable because of their flexibility. Chase Ultimate Rewards can easily be used for travel directly through Chase, by transferring them to a hotel, or by transferring them to an airline.

Personally, my favorite way to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards is by transferring to either British Airways, Southwest Airlines (where we have a Southwest Companion Pass), or Hyatt for hotel stays. I find that I most often get a value of more than 2 cents per point when redeeming with these partners. Another great feature of the Chase Ink Preferred is the ability to earn bonus points on purchases.

Get More Ultimate Rewards Through Bonus Spending Categories: Earn 3X Points

  • Travel: If you travel often, you’ll get good use out of this bonus. It counts on planes, trains, taxi’s, other transportation, hotels, and more.
  • Shipping: Do you ship a lot of packages for your business? This is one of the only credit cards that earn a bonus on it.
  • Internet, Phone, & Cable: I’m sure your business uses at least a phone and internet. Is it even possible to run a business without both of those?
  • Online Advertising (search engines & social media): This category is a newer one, but a very popular way to advertise. Google, Bing, Facebook, Pinterest

Do you and your business spend money on any of these categories? If you do, it’s a great way to earn extra Ultimate Rewards. Think, if you earn 3X the points and redeem them for a value of 2 cents each, that’s like getting 6% back on your purchases. Have you ever seen a 6% cashback card? I didn’t think so…

Redeeming Ultimate Rewards Points with Chase Ink Preferred is Easy

Flexibility, when it comes to redeeming your points, is the main reason that Ultimate Rewards and this credit card offer are so valuable. Some credit cards come with points that are a hassle to use. Not this one. Why? Because they can be used in so many different ways.

Redeem your Ultimate Rewards Directly Through the Chase Travel Portal

Chase has an Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal where you can directly redeem your points for travel. With the Chase Ink Preferred, you can redeem them at an elevated rate of 1.25 cents per point instead of the regular 1 cent per point. Through the travel portal, you can book flights, hotels, rental cars, and activities. No worries if you’re a few points short of your travel purchase because you can use both points and cash if needed.

Airline Transfer Partners

Arguably, the best use of Ultimate Rewards is transferring your points to airline partners. As mentioned above, I love to use my Chase Ultimate Rewards by transferring to airlines and hotels. I mainly transfer my points to three of the Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partners.

I transfer to British Airways to take advantage of their distance based partner flights. This allows me to regularly fly to Hawaii for 25,000 points round-trip. I also transfer points to Southwest Airlines because our points are essentially doubled due to my wife and I earning a Southwest Companion Pass. There are 9 Chase Ultimate Rewards airline transfer partners that all transfer at a 1:1 ratio:

southwest airlines companion pass

Hotel Transfer Partners

Another way to get the most value out of your Ultimate Rewards points is by transferring them to hotel partners. The only hotel partner I transfer to regularly is Hyatt hotels. In most cities, there are Hyatt Place properties that cost 8-12,000 points per night and are very nice. Hyatt award nights in this range usually warrant a decent value, often coming out near 2 cents per point. The other hotel chains don’t have very valuable points, so I don’t find it advantageous to transfer to them. The hotel partners also all transfer at a 1:1 ratio:

  • Hyatt Gold Passport
  • IHG Rewards Club
  • Marriott Rewards
  • The Ritz-Carlton Rewards

You Can Combine Your Points with Other Chase Credit Card Accounts

One of the most exciting features of Chase Ultimate Rewards is that you’re able to combine them between credit card accounts. You may wonder why you would want to do this. Well, it’s simply because Ultimate Rewards have different values depending on which account they are in.

Only three of the seven Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards have the ability to transfer points to airline and hotel partners. That is a huge difference. Those three cards also have elevated values if used in the Chase Travel Portal.

Transfer From a Secondary “Cash Back” Card to a Primary Ultimate Rewards Card

The four other Chase secondary Ultimate Rewards credit cards are advertised as “cash back” cards, but they earn that cash back in the form of Ultimate Rewards. The only difference is that they can only be redeemed for a maximum of 1 cent each in the travel portal (and no transfer partners).

This is where transferring points between accounts will come into play. You can transfer your secondary “cash back” Ultimate Rewards into one of the three primary Ultimate Rewards accounts, if you have one, to redeem for higher values. You’ll see how this plays out below:

One way to earn a lot of points with a lot of value is to have a combination of at least two Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards. You can get the best benefits from both cards and redeem them through the card with the higher redemption rate.

For instance, you can have both the Chase Ink Preferred and the Chase Ink Cash. With these two credit cards, you will earn 130,000 Ultimate Rewards points just from the introductory offers. Right off the bat, that’s a value of $2,600 if you combine your points into your Ink Preferred Ultimate Rewards account. With this card combo, you will also earn the following on spending:

  • 5X Points at office supply stores, phone bills, internet, and cable
  • 3X Points on travel, shipping, and online advertising
  • 2X Points on gas stations and restaurants

That’s a pretty amazing lineup of category bonuses for spend… Now let’s just throw in one more card, in either the Chase Freedom Unlimited or Ink Unlimited to earn 1.5X Points on all other purchases. As you can see, by having multiple Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards you can get a deadly combination of spending bonuses.

I personally have the Chase Ink Preferred, Ink Cash, Sapphire Reserve, and the Chase Freedom in my wallet. Let’s just say I have the potential to earn a lot of Ultimate Rewards even though I don’t spend much money. I precisely select which card I use on each purchase to maximize my earnings. The hardest part is deciding which of the cards work best for your own spending.

All the Protections: Cell Phone, Travel, & Purchases

All these benefits and we haven’t even discussed the purchase protection that the Chase Ink Preferred will give you. If you drop your cell phone (or your wife does…), you’re safe. They’ll pay for repair or replacement. If you’re renting a car, you can tell that pesky salesperson at the counter “NO THANKS” to everything they’re offering. Your credit card has primary rental insurance. Basically, if anything goes wrong with your travel plans, you’re covered.

  • Cell Phone Repair or Replacement
  • Primary Car Rental Insurance
  • Trip Delay & Cancellation Insurance
  • Baggage Insurance
  • Travel Accident Insurance

PayPal Credit Card Review (BONUS: 3 Better Alternative Credit Cards)

paypal credit card review

Have you been emailed to let you know that you’re qualified for a PayPal credit card? I get these emails every few weeks even though I rarely use PayPal. Here is what you should know about these PayPal cards to help you to decide which one is most suitable for your situation. We’ll also let you know about a few alternatives, because the PayPal credit card is most often not your best option.

PayPal Cashback MasterCard

The PayPal Cashback MasterCard is one of the few cards that offer 2 percent cash back for all of your purchases. Consequently, this card stands out in the credit card market. The fixed two percent rate on all purchases beats other top credit cards. Both credit cards have the advantage that they don’t impose any annual fee on cardholders.

Rewards on the PayPal Cashback MasterCard

The PayPal Cashback MasterCard provides 2% cash back for all purchases wherever MasterCard is accepted. Your rewards will be sent to your PayPal account. These rewards will be added to your PayPal account and you must redeem them so that they can be included in your PayPal account balance.

To add cash rewards to the balance of your PayPal account, you should first log into your account, open the rewards summary page to view your cash rewards, and then include the amount to your balance. You can withdraw your balance immediately with the help of a PayPal debit card.

With other methods, withdrawing funds may take a little longer. It will take 3 to 4 business days if you request a direct deposit and 1 to 2 weeks if you choose to take a check from PayPal.

Other Benefits of the PayPal Cashback Mastercard

  • There is no redemption threshold. This means that you don’t have to reach a certain level to start redeeming your rewards. You can redeem your rewards anytime by simply transferring your rewards to your PayPal balance.
  • Ease of use and simplicity are big plus points. You can make good use of the high reward rate to earn plenty of cash back that is easy to compute and follow.
  • There is no fee for overseas transactions.

PayPal Extras MasterCard

On the other hand, the PayPal Extras MasterCard offers rewards based on its own point system.

Rewards on the PayPal Extras MasterCard

It will offer 3 points on every dollar that you spend at restaurants and gas stations. You will get 2 points on each dollar that you can spend at eBay and PayPal. You will also get 1 point for each dollar that you spend on the rest of your purchases.

The points that you earn must be redeemed via PayPal’s online portal. You should also keep a couple of restrictions in mind. For instance, air travel and hotel rewards must be claimed at least 21 days prior to travel.

Redeeming PayPal Credit Card Points

In order to obtain various types of rewards that you earned through PayPal Extras MasterCard, you must cross the following thresholds:

  • 2,200 points in the case of gift cards
  • 3,000 points on merchandise ranging from sports equipment to housewares
  • 6,000 points to get a $50 cash back which will be credited to your PayPal account
  • 15,000 points for car rentals, hotels, airfare or travel vouchers

Remember that the maximum amount of points that you can accumulate with the PayPal Extras MasterCard is 50,000 in one accounting year (starting from the day when you first opened your account).

Calculating the cash rewards for the PayPal Extras MasterCard is a bit tricky since it involves a number of categories. You will have to be a little organized to know how much cash you are getting back and from which category.

You can redeem 6000 points to earn cash back of $50 on your PayPal Extras MasterCard. This means that each point represents about 0.83 cents which is less than a cent for each point.

Comparing the Two PayPal Credit Card Options

Using this data, you can now make a comparison of how much benefit you gain from the PayPal Extras MasterCard versus the PayPal Cashback MasterCard.

  • For payment at restaurants and gas stations, the PayPal Extras MasterCard is better with 49 cents cash back on every dollar spent compared to PayPal Cashback MasterCard’s 2 cents on every dollar spent.
  • When it comes to spending at PayPal and eBay, the PayPal Cashback MasterCard comes out on top.It gives 2 cents cash back for each dollar spent while the PayPal Extras MasterCard gives only 66 cents.
  • Once again, for each dollar spent on the rest of your purchases, the PayPal Cashback MasterCard is much better with 2 cents compared to the 0.83 cents that you earn from PayPal Extras MasterCard.

Keep in mind that this comparison applies to the $50 cash back that you are entitled to upon reaching 6000 points from using the PayPal Extras MasterCard. The redemption rates for other categories such as merchandise and gifts will be different so you must also make a similar analysis for these types of transactions to make a comparison.

If you carry out overseas transactions with the PayPal Extras MasterCard, you will incur a 3% transaction fee. In such cases, you will be better off with the PayPal Cashback MasterCard which imposes no fee on overseas transactions.

Which is the Better Card?

It may appear that the PayPal Cashback MasterCard gives you more rewards compared to the PayPal Extras MasterCard. But the fact of the matter is that PayPal Extras MasterCard will get you more cash back for spending on gas stations and restaurants. If you spend substantial amounts on these two places, you should opt for the PayPal Extras MasterCard.

How to Apply for a PayPal Credit Card

You will need a PayPal account in order to apply for these cards. Keep in mind that the rewards will remain valid so long as your PayPal account remains open. You may apply for only one of these two cards. It is highly likely that the PayPal Cashback MasterCard is your best bet.

There are three separate APR tiers which depend on the applicant’s credit score. The APR that is charged to you will depend on your credit score.

Benefits of Having a Mastercard

Since these are MasterCard cards, you will also get the following benefits:

  • Price safeguard: If you purchase some item with one of these cards and the price of that item falls within a limit of 60 days, the price difference will be reimbursed to you.
  • Warranty extension: The manufacturer or store warranty for the item you purchased with the help of these cards will be increased up to one year.
  • Identity theft protection: If you ever become the victim of identity theft, you will receive identity theft alerts, your credit card will be replaced and you will also get identity theft affidavit assistance.

You must pay the due amount in full by the end of each month. If you are unable to pay off the full amount, pay as much as you can. Pay the minimum payment at the very least.

PayPal Credit Card Login Information

In order to make online payments, you should first login to your PayPal account. After you click on the upper right-hand login button on PayPal.com, click on the button marked ‘wallet’ at the top. On the next page, you will see the PayPal MasterCard towards the left side (remember to first link your card to your account). Upon clicking the PayPal MasterCard, you will be taken to the Synchrony Bank Portal. You can then view your account, manage online payments and carry out other transactions.

If you are a frequent PayPal user and looking for an attractive cash-back rate, then the PayPal Cashback MasterCard is the right choice for you.

BP Credit Card Review: Find Out Which Gas Credit Card is Best

bp credit card review

The BP Visa Credit Card offers plenty of rewards for everyday purchases. Therefore, it is worth considering this card for covering your daily expenses. This card offers a return ranging from 2.25% to 3% on dining, travel, and groceries.

If you use the card to make purchases at BP stations, you will enjoy a very decent cash-back reward that ranges from 3.75% to 5%. It is important to note that you won’t receive any cash back from using this card at other stations besides BP.

The rewards offered by this card are quite good. The rewards will, of course, vary according to your individual spending habits.

Cardholders can enjoy fairly decent rewards on dining out, travel, groceries and purchasing gasoline at BP stations. For purchasing gas at a BP station (up to 20 gallons), you can enjoy reward rates that range between 3% and 5%.

Statement Credit

You may also make use of your points for statement credit. This approach, however, will produce a slight drop in your returns. The rate for groceries, dining, and traveling will go down to 2.25 percent and the rate for purchasing gas at BP stations will also drop to 3.75 percent. If you spend wisely, you can make good use of your rewards. The BP Visa Credit Card will offer good rewards that are very much comparable to other leading credit cards.

You can make good savings with the BP Visa Credit Card regardless of the forms of credit that you prefer – statement credit or discounts on gas at BP stations.

Benefits of the BP Visa Credit Card

Here are the details on the benefits that you can enjoy with the BP Visa Credit Card:

  • In the introductory offer, you can get 25 cents off on every gallon for every $100 spent via your BP Visa Credit Card within the initial 90 days of your account opening. This reward does not apply to non-BP gas stations.
  • 25 cents off on every gallon on each $100 spent at BP.
  • 15 cents off per gallon on every $100 spent on eligible travel, groceries, and dining.
  • 5 cents off per gallon on each $100 spent wherever Visa credit cards are accepted. This does not apply to non-BP gas stations.
  • There is no annual fee.

Also, you may earn rewards on the BP Visa Credit Card in two bonus ways. In the initial 90 days following the opening of your account, you can earn 25 cents on each $100 spent. In effect, this is a 5% reward rate for all purchases.

Understanding How the Rewards System Works with the BP Visa Credit Card

Let’s take a simple example to find out rewards on typical purchases. The basic idea that you must keep in mind is that you will get a certain amount of money off on every gallon of gasoline for each $100 spent. You will receive 15 cents off on every gallon of gas for each $100 spent on eligible dining, groceries, and travel. This discount is applicable only up to 20 gallons. So, if you spend $100 on eligible travel, the maximum amount of reward that you are entitled to will be $0.15 x 20 = $3.

You can redeem your rewards in two basic forms: you can use them as a statement of credit or redeem them at the BP gas station. Keep in mind that using the rewards to get statement credit will reduce your benefits. Instead of a maximum 20 factor, your accumulated rewards will be multiplied with 15. So depending on where you choose to spend, your reward rates will turn out to be 3.75%, 2.25% or 0.75% when rewards are applied towards statement credit.

Is the BP Visa Credit Card Better Than Other Credit Cards?

Here, the BP Visa Credit Card will be compared with some of the other leading cards that also offer benefits and rewards for purchases on gas, dining, and groceries.

Chase Freedom

This is a leading credit card that offers plenty of rewards on a number of different categories including online shopping on Amazon.com, gas, and dining out. The Chase Freedom Credit Card will yield a cash-back reward of 5% on purchases in eligible bonus categories every quarter. The downside is that the reward rate will drop to just 1 percent once your purchases cross a limit of $1,500. There are also pros and cons to varying categories. The advantage is that such an approach can be helpful if you like to shop around at several different places. Not being bound with a fixed rewards system will offer more opportunities for earning cash back. But you will also have to look out for the categories to maximize your rewards.

Further Benefits on the BP Visa Credit Card

You can expect the following benefits from the BP Visa Credit Card:

Redeeming Rewards

You can redeem your reward in two ways as described above. This added versatility will provide great convenience depending on your preferences.

No Liability for Fraud

The BP credit card will offer a number of safeguards that provide greater protection compared to cash transactions. There is always the risk of getting cheated by malicious people so you need some kind of protection. This comes in the form of the $0 fraud liability. So the cardholder is not liable for fraudulent charges made through their credit cards.

Introductory Offer and No Annual Fees

The introductory offer on the initial 90 days has been discussed above. No annual fee means that your precious rewards are not consumed by the often high annual fees that come with other cards. Cardholders will not have to worry about spending more with their BP Visa Credit Card in order to minimize the effect of the annual fee.

Credit building

By using credit cards in a responsible manner you can build up a good credit score. With this, you become eligible for a wide range of financial services that are necessary at some point in your life. Individuals who have poor credit score can also make improvements by making responsible use of credit cards.

Applying for a BP Visa Credit Card

You can apply for the BP Visa Credit Card by picking up an application form at the local BP gas station. If you want to apply online, then go to www.mybpstation.com/cards.

The good part about the online application process is that you can expect to get a quick response. Applying through the mail will obviously take a little extra time for processing your form. Once you have been approved, you will get your BP credit within 7-10 business days.
